The economic crash of the early 1980’s significantly increased the number of homeless men relying on the Mission’s services.

A severe downturn in the global economy causes manufacturers to streamline operations, pushing hundreds of men out of unskilled jobs and leaving them without clear prospects. At the same time, budget cutbacks force mental institutions to release fragile patients onto the streets, where many end up homeless. The Mission’s new facilities are quite suddenly inundated with need.
